A .
All living things cannot live without water. A great variety of plants grow in places with water, where a lot of creatures gather. For example, there are more than 2,000 species of wildlife in the Kushiro Wetland which is located in eastern-Hokkaido and is the largest peatland in Japan.
Wetlands are important not only for wild animals and plants but also for human beings. We can get what we want from wetlands, such as water for daily life or industry and fish or shellfish, and at the same time, we can have contact with nature and enjoy it in the wetlands. Through the ages, human beings have developed their lives around the waterfront, by growing crops in the fields and raising livestock.
We have recently found that wetlands including swamps, tidal flats and Mangrove forests, have the power to purify water and air. It is also known that wetlands are effective in preventing floods in the surrounding area by means of absorbing water like a sponge even if rain or a stream flows into them. That is why wetlands are precious for all life on the Earth.
