A variety of forward-looking activities are carried out in the Kushiro region to protect wetlands. These have included work to secure Japan’s first wetland registration under the Ramsar Convention (Kushiro-shitsugen), a wetland nature restoration project, and National Trust campaigns. To allow the replication of these local initiatives for the conservation of wetlands in other parts of the world, KIWC actively promotes international cooperation to further advance the preservation and wise use of wetlands. Related work includes the organization of training programs and workshops for developing countries and the dispatch of experts to such nations.
The Centre also collects, exchanges and provides up-to-date information on wetland conservation and biodiversity, and works to extend its international cooperative network. These efforts include the promotion of exchanges with the Hunter Estuary Wetlands Ramsar site in Australia, which has a sister relationship with the Kushiro sites, and the hosting of international conferences in Kushiro.
